With the Superbowl just around the corner many of us are in the initial plans for preparing for a Superbowl party. Stress takes a heavy health toll on your mental health, but it can also manifest into surprising physical ailments. Did you know the highest number of people being struck by lightning occurs in the summer? A lightning strike has the temperature of 50,000 degrees Fahrenheit which is hotter than the surface of the Sun, but fortunately most people who are hit by lightning survive. Less than 10% die each year from a lightning strike, still approximately 58 people do. Even though most don’t die when struck by lightning, they do deal with severe and long term effects.

Concussions are basically a bruising of the brain and can have several degrees of seriousness. Some can be as simple as the victim experiencing some mild confusion. Others that are more serious, can have extended loss of consciousness with memory loss and coordination problems. In most cases, concussions will heal over time and do not cause longer term or permanent effects. Although repeated concussions can lead to a cumulative effect, which may cause permanent or longer term neurological problems.

Heat Exhaustion is the most common heat illness. Your first priority in dealing with an individual suffering from a heat exhaustion is to remove the victim from the hot environment. If they are in the sun, move them into the shade. If they are in a hot room, move them into a cooler room. Lay the person down, loosen or remove any restrictive clothing.
